Creating The Best Viral Marketing Campaign Ever

If you have ever seen a funny or clever ad on television and though to yourself, thats a great ad! I wish I thought of that. Alot of other people would be thinking the same thing.
There are alot of good ads out and about, especially online. Some funny, some touch emotions, some are just plain shocking. But really there is a lot of work that goes into a top viral video or ad. And it starts with a simple little idea can create a lot of buzz.
It seems are beginning to see a HUGE shift taking place in the way we're advertised to.
Eyeballs are no longer captive to force fed tag lines and images of shiny products in the noon day sun. If you want to connect with your audience, you have to approach them with something they WANT to see.
To capture an audience and create and effective viral marketing campaign , you have to get on their wave length and bring to the surface things that they are always thinking but never share with others.
If you can do this effectively others will let their friends and relative know about your ad and bang, you will see instant results. Its almost like the secret recipe to creating the best viral marketing campaign ever.
When you create something that people find very interesting and what to pass on to other people The more funny, extraordinary, shocking it is the better the effect and the more your viral marketing campaign will spread.
Hotmail are a classic example of a company starting with nothing, now they have grown beyond belief.
Their viral marketing claim to fame was that whenever one of their users sent an email to someone, they had a quirky message down the bottom saying "get your very own FREE email account at Hotmail" At the time email did cost quite a bit, but it was enough to get their foot in the door and build a multimillion dollar company.
It's called viral marketing because it works like a virus. A virus infects a host, which becomes a carrier, and passes the virus onto others who then become carriers. That's why computer viruses are such a threat, because they spread exponentially.
Of course, in the marketing world, we're not sending out computer viruses, but we want our marketing message to be propagated in the same manner, i.e. exponentially. Any method of marketing that can propagate your message in this manner could be called "viral marketing".
As pointed out, Hotmail is a classic example of viral marketing - the email sent out by its users (the "carriers") propagated the marketing message (a little signature line advertising Hotmail). Many of the recipients themselves joined Hotmail, and became "carriers" of the message themselves.
Actually, there's another recent case of viral-ness. Check youtube last night for most watched videos.
6 of the top 8 most viewed videos were on "starcraft 2" In one day starcraft 2 videos went to over 2.5 million views. One day. Now That's viral. But viral video and ads work so well if you trying to create a viral marketing campaign that gets talked about.
Viral marketing doesn't have to be rocket science. I like to think of Viral marketing as chain reaction marketing. Sometime its just starts out as a simple set of ideas but from these ideas could emerge the best viral marketing campaign ever.
Sometimes the best viral marketing campaigns have come from studying others in specific niches and work out why that idea worked for them, and to see if you can recreate something similar but specific for you target audience.
